Espresso, the manual's way
Warm up and brew (the manual)
The manual's routine.
- Switch on with the portafilter in the group, so it warms up.
- Wait for the coffee temperature lamp to stop flashing: about 1.5 minutes.
- Run some water through the group with the coffee switch. The manual says this clears residue and settles the temperature.
- Fill the basket so it is three-quarters full once tamped firmly, and wipe the grounds off the rim.
- Lock the portafilter in, turning from left to right, with firm pressure at the end.
- Put the cup on the grid and push the coffee switch up or down. The dose stops itself; the gauge should show 9 to 12 bar.
Coffee keeps dripping for a few seconds after the dose ends. A sloppy puck straight after the shot is normal, says the manual.
