Wash, fit the filter, fill

The manual's first-use steps.

1. Wash the tank, portafilter, baskets, jug and drip tray in warm water with mild detergent, then dry them. Hand wash only.
2. Soak the new water filter in a cup of water for 5 minutes, then rinse it and the holder's steel mesh under cold water.
3. Fit the filter into the two halves of its holder, set the date dial and push the holder onto the adapter inside the tank.
4. Fill the tank to MAX (2 litres) with cold water.
5. Push the tank fully down to lock it.
6. Fill the hopper with beans and twist it to lock.

Date dial: the US manual says set it 2 months ahead; the UK guide says set the month the filter is due, and recommends a new one every 3 months.

Heat up and flush it through

The manual's first flush.

1. Plug in and press POWER. The light flashes while it heats; a pumping sound is normal.
2. Wait until POWER stops flashing and all the panel lights are on.
3. Put a large heatproof bowl under the group and press 2 CUP.
4. Turn the dial towards the steam icon for 10 seconds with the wand over the tray, then back to STANDBY.
5. Turn the dial towards the hot-water icon for 10 seconds, then back to STANDBY.
6. Repeat until the tank is empty, then refill it.
