Grinder deep clean and burr replacement

When, and which burrs fit yours

The manual's advanced cleaning takes out the lower burr. It says it is "only required if there is a blockage between the grinding burrs and the grinder outlet", and warns the burrs are very sharp. The same steps let you fit new burrs.

Which burrs: Breville changed them in 2019. Read the date code (PDC, year then week) on the rating label: under the machine, or behind the tank or drip tray.

Breville gives no replacement interval. Try adjusting the upper burr finer first if shots run fast at setting 1.

Lower burr out

The manual's steps. Empty the hopper and run the grinder empty first, then switch off and unplug.

  1. Take off the hopper and set GRIND SIZE to 1.
  2. Fit a 10 mm socket on the nut and turn it clockwise to loosen it only. It is a reverse (left-hand) thread.
  3. Set GRIND SIZE to 16, then unlock and lift out the upper burr.
  4. Take off the nut, the spring washer and the flat washer, and lift out the lower burr carefully.
  5. Lift out the grind fan, the metal washer and the felt washer with long-nose pliers.
  6. Clear the outlet chute with the brush or a pipe cleaner.

Lower burr back in

The manual's steps, in reverse.

  1. Refit the felt washer, the metal washer and the grind fan with the pliers.
  2. Fit the lower burr with its drive pin lined up with the cavity.
  3. Fit the flat washer, then the spring washer.
  4. Fit the nut and turn it anticlockwise to tighten.
  5. Refit and lock the upper burr.
  6. Set GRIND SIZE to 5, then refit and lock the hopper.

Breville gives no tightening torque. New burrs do not come with the washers or felt washer (eReplacementParts): reuse yours or order them.
