Steps marked "the manual" follow the current Sage UK guide (SES875 UK UG2 A25, 2025) and Breville US book (BES870 USCM X26, 2026), with the 2016 US book (F16) for the controls and grinder pages and the 2012 and 2015 US books (A12, C15) for the early machines. Where they differ, the step names the region. Breville's own videos on the BES870 product hub add the clear-water flush and some steps; they are marked. Part numbers are from Breville's and Sage's parts pages, eReplacementParts' BES870XL list and Ricambi. Everything else is marked as coming from a named retailer, reviewer, technician or owner. Nothing here was checked on a machine.

Slips in the manuals, flagged where they matter: the US and Australian descale text says turn the dial right for steam, which is the wrong way round; the UK guide's drawing still shows PROGRAM while its text says Programme.

Not settled, and flagged where they appear: the screen-screw key size; the case screw size and count by build; the group collar screw drive; whether early US machines have Descale mode or a numbered upper burr; which lower burr number is right, and SP0001801's date range; the steam tip number (SP0001569 against SP0001486); 230 V numbers for the solenoid, thermocoil and boards; the meaning of all lights flashing; and the shots that trigger the CLEAN light.

Breville publishes no dimensioned drawing. The sizes are scaled from Breville's straight-front studio photo and a reviewer's straight side photo, checked against the stored tamper face. Height agrees with the maker figures; the measured depth (316 mm) is shorter than the official 333 to 351 mm and is not resolved.
