Opening the case is an unauthorised repair under Breville's and Sage's warranty terms and voids the warranty (1 year in the US and Canada, 2 years in the UK, EU and Australia). The side dial turns a selector valve and presses separate microswitches for steam and hot water. Caffeine Fix (technician, 2024) found a dropped machine whose actuator had broken, so steam never started; replacing it meant taking the front panel off, with "a very awkward position to remove the nut".
No step-by-step method for the selector or the wand removal was found, and the nut size and how the dial knob comes off are not known, so none is given.
