Probes and sensors
Probes, safety thermostats and the brew switch
ECM's manual says any repair or change of components must be carried out by an authorised specialist dealer, using only original spare parts; otherwise ECM accepts no liability. Treat this as dealer work.
- Temperature probes: one in each boiler (P6037.1) and a sensor in the group (P7036). The II is PID-controlled; there is no pressurestat.
- Level probe: a dirty probe lets the steam boiler overfill. Clive's clean is on the next screen.
- Safety thermostats: 145 °C, listed on both boilers and the group.
- Brew microswitch: if the pump starts before the lever is fully up, or not at full lift, Clive adjusts the switch's nuts under the right side panel.
- Clock battery: if the timer stops switching it on, the manual says the board battery is flat; have it replaced at the next service.
Clean the level probe
Clive Coffee's method, for the original Synchronika; the II's probe has the same ECM number.
- Unplug, let it cool, and take the panels off.
- Pull the wire off the probe.
- Unscrew the whole probe assembly with a 19 mm spanner.
- Clean the probe with steel wool or a brush.
- Wrap the thread in PTFE tape and refit it without over-tightening. Push the probe fully down and tighten the upper nut with a 13 mm spanner.
- Purge: machine off, hot-water lever fully open over a large jug, switch on; when water flows, draw 240 to 350 ml, close, and let it refill.
