Black flakes in the water

Black or grey flakes in the water

Dark flakes became known on the 2023 Evo, whose aluminium boiler had a dark lining that flaked on some machines. Gaggia replaced those boilers under guarantee claims, and the E24 has a brass boiler instead.

On a brass or unlined machine, the retailer Whole Latte Love lists other sources of black specks: a spent carbon filter, dust falling in from under the lid, coffee debris on the group side, or scale.

An owner blog's check: take the nozzle off and run hot water from the wand into a white cup. A few flakes that stop after flushing are loose debris. Flakes that keep coming mean a lining is failing; UK owners were sent to Gaggia Direct with the serial number from the base.
