It switches itself off

It switches off, or will not stay on

It switches off after 20 minutes. That is by design on EU and UK machines: the manual's automatic switch-off. Press the on/off button to restart. The machine does not switch itself off while the steam button is on.

The power light stays on only while you hold the button. The UK retailer Shades of Coffee calls this a failed timer board, and a common fault on Classics from 2019 on. The board is a replaceable part beside the pump.

Owners also defeat the timer, with a plug-in link at the brew button or a latching power switch that bypasses the board; Shades of Coffee sells both. These change the mains wiring. Gaggia's safety booklet forbids modifications and they affect the warranty, so this guide gives no steps.
