No water, and the pump rattles

Load the circuit through the wand

The pump runs with a dry rattle and no water comes from the group or the wand. It happens on a new machine, after a long rest, after the tank ran dry, or after steaming for more than 60 seconds. The manual blames an air bubble and gives this cure.

  1. Check there is water in the tank and both silicone tubes are in it.
  2. Put a cup under the steam wand and open the knob anticlockwise.
  3. Press the brew button. After a few seconds water comes out of the wand.
  4. Run about a cup of water, close the knob and press the brew button again.
  5. If water is left in the wand, let steam out for a few seconds to clear it.

Force-prime the pump

If the manual's method does not bring water, the retailer Whole Latte Love pushes water into the pump by hand. It is not in Gaggia's manual.

  1. Switch the on/off button off, and press the brew and steam buttons down.
  2. Open the steam knob fully.
  3. Push water into the intake tube with a rubber bulb, a turkey baster or a squeezed bottle. It is the longer tube, with the angled cuts.
  4. Switch the power on while you push. When the pump's note changes, switch off.
  5. Refit the tank with both tubes down in the water.
  6. Switch on and let the wand run until solid water flows. Close the knob, then check the group.

A steady hum with no flow anywhere, which priming does not cure, is a failed pump: see the pump.
