First start-up

Fill the tank and seat the drain box

The manual's steps and its installation guide.

  1. Stand the machine on a level counter more than 90 cm high.
  2. Pull off the drain box.
  3. Slide the tank forward until you can take its cover off.
  4. Fill it with filtered drinking water up to the fill line.
  5. Slide the tank back until it touches the contacts at the back of its bay.
  6. Refit the drain box: two magnets line it up. Push gently on the front if it does not seat.

The manual says the drain box must be fitted correctly for the machine to work.

Switch on and fill the coffee boiler

Still the manual.

  1. Plug in and turn the main switch to 1.
  2. Wait while the steam boiler fills itself to its level.
  3. Move the paddle from right to left and hold it at brewing for 30 to 40 seconds, to fill the coffee boiler.
  4. Let it heat. It only starts heating once both boilers are full.
  5. Watch the brew gauge rise to about 12 bar and stop there, while a little water runs into the drip tray.
  6. Check the steam gauge settles at about 1.8 bar.

The 12 bar reading is normal: the expansion valve lets a little water out so the group never goes higher. While brewing, the gauge reads 8 to 10 bar.

Flush it before the first coffee

The manual's first-use flush. It asks for the same after the machine has stood for more than 8 hours.

  1. Put a jug under the group, with no portafilter fitted.
  2. Run water through the group with the paddle for at least 2 minutes.
  3. Open the steam knob for at least 30 seconds, with the wand over the drip tray.
  4. Move the jug under the hot-water spout and run at least 0.5 litres with the left knob.
  5. Empty the jug and the drain box.
