Take the base off

One security Torx screw

The manual: "The base mat is fastened to the machine with a special Torx screw to prevent tampering with electrical parts. For any type of maintenance or if the power cable has to be replaced, please contact an authorised SERVICE CENTRE."

La Pavoni's manual says any servicing or repair, apart from normal cleaning and maintenance, must be done by an authorised service centre, and that unauthorised repairs or non-original parts void the warranty. Its service-centre list names none in the UK. The method here is from retailers and owners, as marked.

La Pavoni's parts list gives one M5 × 12 stainless Torx T20 security screw (403432), with a pin in the middle. Before about 2007 the screw went down through the drip-tray well (a retailer, Espresso Care).

You do not need the plate off to reset the safety thermostat: see safety thermostat.

Take the base plate off

The parts list gives the screw; no source gives a step-by-step method, so these are the plain steps.

  1. Unplug and let the machine cool fully. Let the pressure out as in filling the boiler, and empty the boiler through the cap so no water reaches the wiring.
  2. Take out the grid and the drip tray.
  3. Lay the machine on a towel so you can reach the underside.
  4. Undo the one security Torx T20 screw.
  5. Lift off the base plate.
  6. Refit in reverse. No torque is published.
