Bubbling in the tank, tank water getting hot, steam from the short return hose, and the boiler refilling often. The steam boiler's safety valve is passing: scale is holding it open, or it is weeping.

A little gurgling can also be nothing more than the shared return fitting. And a boiler that overfills will push water out this way.
