Safety valve

Check the safety valve

The safety valve on the steam boiler and the overpressure valve both return to the tank through one shared cross fitting. Some gurgling is a quirk of that layout: return water reaches the hot safety valve and boils, with nothing wrong. Water returning to the tank while the pump pushes against a closed valve is also normal.

  1. Unplug, let it go cold and take the top panel off.
  2. Pull the two hoses off the cross fitting so you can see which valve is passing.
  3. If it is the safety valve, soak it clean of scale or replace it.

Owners say needing a new one every year is not normal: look for scale or an overfilling boiler. See the level probe.
