First start-up
Before you plug it in
The importer's first-time steps.
- Test your water with the strips supplied: 3 grains per gallon (about 51 ppm) or less. See water.
- Rinse the tank and fill it with cold, soft water.
- Push it in slowly, with the 2 long tubes reaching the bottom and not kinked.
- Set all 3 front switches to off.
- Plug into an earthed socket: no extension lead.
Fill the boiler, then heat (0 and 1 switch)
For a power switch marked 0 and 1 (US machines from 2022). The brew switch does the filling.
- Turn the power switch to 1.
- At once, turn the brew switch on: the pump fills the boiler.
- When water flows from the group, turn the brew switch off.
- Watch the middle amber lamp light and the display climb.
- Lock the portafilter in and heat for at least 15 minutes (it is ready in about 5, steadier after 15). Keep cups on top.
- To steam, turn on the rear steam-unit switch.
Older machines: the 0, 1, 2 switch
For a three-position power switch: 0 off, 1 fill (pump only, element off), 2 heat.
- Turn the power switch to 1 (fill).
- Turn the brew switch on until water comes from the group, then leave it 15 seconds more.
- Turn the brew switch off.
- Turn the power switch to 2: the amber lamp lights.
- Lock the portafilter in and heat for at least 15 minutes.
The importer also uses fill mode if the machine has not been used for a long time, or the boiler has been drained. Which way is "off" for the brew and steam switches differs between versions: go by the legends on yours.
