Know the machine
What is on the outside
Four switches, two lights and one knob. No display, no menu and no pressure gauge. Tap a part to see what it does.
The names used here are the manual's: coffee switch, hot-water switch, steam switch, tap.
What is on the inside
One brass boiler feeds both the group and the tap. A vibration pump fills it from the tank, an adjustable valve returns surplus water to the tank, and an electric three-way valve starts and stops the water at the group.
There is no temperature probe, no level sensor and no electronic controller: three thermostats switch the element.
One boiler, and the Silvia E timer
The same boiler makes coffee and steam, at two temperatures. The manual's routine:
- Coffee: steam switch off. Wait for the orange light to go off.
- Steam: steam switch on. Wait for the orange light to go off again.
- After steaming: refill the boiler through the wand with the hot-water switch.
Silvia E only. The machine switches itself off after 30 minutes without a coffee or hot water. Steaming does not restart the count, so the manual says to run the coffee switch for a few seconds before you steam, and calls a switch-off during steaming "not a malfunction but a technical feature". If the machine seems off with the main switch on, the 2024 manual says stand-by is active: press coffee, hot water or steam.
