The pump runs, but no water comes
Check the tank and prime it
The manual's checks come first, then a retailer's way to prime (1st-line).
- Check there is water in the tank.
- Check both silicone tubes are in the water and not floating, and that the tubes and "vacuum trap" are seated (the manual).
- Open the tap and switch on the hot-water switch.
- Wait for water at the wand. It can take 60 to 90 seconds; squeezing the tank tubes lets you feel the pump take water.
- Close the tap and switch off the hot-water switch.
Force-prime the pump
An owner's method (dkaraboy), also in a Whole Latte Love article we saw only in summary. It is not in Rancilio's manual.
- Open the tap and switch on the hot-water switch.
- Fill a syringe or a turkey baster with water.
- Push water into the intake tube while the pump runs.
- When water comes from the wand, put the tube back in the tank, close the tap and switch off.
A steady hum with no water anywhere, which priming does not cure, is a failed pump: see the pump.
