Weekly backflush

Backflush with detergent

The job keeps its usual name, but Rancilio's manual puts the detergent backflush under daily cleaning. A blind filter disk is not listed as supplied.

1. Empty the drip tray. Run the coffee switch for 3 to 4 seconds with no portafilter.
2. Brush the seal under the group. The manual says: do not brush the shower screen.
3. Put the blind disk in the portafilter and add detergent as its pack says.
4. Lock it in, and lift off the cup-holder grid so you can see the tray.
5. Coffee switch 5 seconds on, 10 seconds off. Repeat until the water in the tray runs clear.
6. Take out the portafilter and the blind disk, and rinse both under fresh water.

Rinse and clean up

Still the manual.

1. Put the blind disk back in and lock the portafilter in.
2. Rinse several times with the same 5 seconds on, 10 seconds off, with no detergent.
3. Empty the drip tray.
4. Take the basket out and clean all the parts. Rinse them in hot water to dissolve any coffee oil.
5. Reassemble and refit the grid.
6. Wipe the housing. On stainless parts, follow the grain of the satin finish.
